A friend of mine was working on taking in a stray and had finally got him to the point where he could be handled.
Poor thing turned out to have FIP, so that's another reason to keep them inside. Unfortunately, he did not survive.
(FIP is feline infectious peritonitis, which is caused by a coronavirus. About 10% of cats infected with FeCV get FIP. Think of it a very nasty long COVID, except that it's almost always fatal).
Also, cats will get into fights with foxes. One of the barn cats got into a fight with a fox, although to be fair...the FOX came IN the barn. I hope he did more damage to the fox than the fox did to him...he had to be taken to the vet for a course of antibiotics. Cats and foxes compete for food, so they will fight.
And that's not counting the fact that it's surprising how far into town coyotes will come, and coyotes find cat quite tasty.
