Absolutely get a black and white laser printer if you can.

The cartridges look hideously expensive, but they actually contain some of the moving parts of the printer and last a long time. (Get the high capacity cartridge if your printer model has one).

They are also much faster than inkjet printers and jam less often. (They do sometimes jam, but as stated in the article there's not much we can do about the basic handling properties of paper).

Oh, and they also hold more paper at a time so you don't have to reload them as often.

Consumer level inkjets are kind of cheap trash. They don't like being used too much, they don't like being used too little...

As somebody who occasionally has to print off 500 page documents, get a laser printer.
