I THINK their proofreading mechanism will keep it down. We're seeing the high mutation rate because of the sheer number of cases, and the more people we can get vaccinated (there's already a study demonstrating lower genetic variability of COVID-19 in highly-vaccinated areas) the faster we can deal with it.
