Unless your dog is horse trained and the horses are dog trained, this can result in, potentially, a dead rider, a dead horse, or a dead dog.

I have almost come off more than once because of somebody's loose pooch who wanted to play with the horses. And horses kick, and if a horse gets a dog, the chances of that dog not being seriously injured are slim.

Even if you don't see horses around, leash your dog on those trails. Even if they normally have good recall.

(Again, the caveat is that if your dog is legit trained to be around horses, you...well, you know what you're doing ;)).
