And I'm not saying everyone needs to play without alignment.

I find it constraining. It's easier for me to develop a well rounded and consistent character (or a hilarious one) without it. I also feel as if it is a crutch that people should move beyond.

Alignment has been part of D&D since the start, but it doesn't have to be unless you want it to be.

I would hate randomly generated alignment, personally. But it sounds like you thought it was fun. So you do you.

But I have found taking it away means people are LESS likely to play ridiculously goody two-shoes characters. Bear in mind most GMs won't allow evil characters and many won't allow neutral.
