And it's caused by shaming.
My parents did their level best to shelter me from body shaming, and I was a skinny kid. As a result, the only part of my body I have image issues about is my buck teeth (which can't be corrected at this point).
Why? Because a school photographer told me I had to keep my mouth shut during my elementary school photo because "Nobody wants to look at that."
Elementary/grade school. An adult said that to a nine year old.
I am still real self conscious about my teeth, although not to the degree I was when I was younger. A round of braces (which only partially corrected the issues) didn't exactly help.
If you don't tell kids there's something wrong with their body, they won't get body image issues. It's really that easy.
(My mother was FURIOUS when she found out what happened and got the school to promise not to hire that photographer again. I'm sure I wasn't the only kid he was doing things like that to).
