Are Production Studios Starting to Take the Hugos Seriously?

The Hugo awards are given out by the World Science Fiction Society. For those who don’t know, they are a two layer award. Both nominating and voting is restricted to members of the World Science Fiction Society.

Which means people who pay an annual fee to be a member. It’s usually about $50. So, it might as well be a popular choice award.

Hugos are given out in a number of categories, and these include two categories for Dramatic Presentation.

The Dramatic Presentation Categories and Rules

The two Hugos given for Dramatic Presentation are “Long Form” and “Short Form.”

This is a simple division by length. If it is less than 90 minutes long, it is “Short Form,” if it’s more, it’s “Long Form.”

Dramatic presentations in any medium are eligible. This means that the following are typically considered eligible:

  • Movies
  • TV shows
  • Live theater
  • Radio plays and audio dramas
  • Computer games (This year there is an actual video game Hugo, and if that sticks around then this may be removed, but what it really refers to is visual novels like Kentucky Route Zero, not high action…
