As somebody who was forced into skirts in school by a uniform rule…and who really felt “stuffed into skirts” by it (Yes, now I wear skirts sometimes, but it’s always MY choice, not “You’re a girl so this is what you have to do”).

If girls are allowed to wear pants and boys skirts then I have a lot fewer problems with it.

Hair is still an issue. The “black hair is unclean and unprofessional” problem is def. more a thing in the US than the UK.

And from what I know, UK schools know better than to tell Sikh boys they can’t wear their hair long :P. Here there are problems with indigenous boys (it’s traditional amongst some groups for boys and girls alike to wear their hair as long as it will grow) being told to cut their hair and the history of racism and prejudice it reflects.

Uniforms MIGHT be a solution to keeping “gang colors” out of schools, but I think that’s often a problem more in the heads of the adults than realities.
