Contemplating Surreal Estate

The new SyFy original series has an intriguing concept, and one which is right up my alley.

It centers around a real estate agency with an interesting specialty: Haunted houses.

This means that they have to bust the ghost before they can sell the house, which they do with a combination of knowledge and weird technology. Much of the plot centers around new employee Susan Ireland (Sarah Levy), who looks decidedly like Jean Grey.

I’ve seen two episodes so far and my initial reaction is that it is intriguing, but…

How the Concept is Playing Out

The haunted house side of things is fairly straightforward. Something is going on with the house, and the team have to work out what and how to deal with it. In the first two episodes, this included a young woman developing telekinesis because she’s in a bad relationship (Apparently in this world, boys make you develop telekinesis. Or something) and an imaginary friend that turned out to be a malevolent entity. Apparently Ireland has pyrokinesis, and this is not the only not-always-subtle Stephen King nod. Except they have to convince her to believe in ghosts, which I’m not quite buying. But…
