This happens to intersex infants all the time, unfortunately. If gender *can't* be determined at birth, then there should be an X on the birth certificate, which can be changed to an M or F later for nothing when the kid is old enough to help in the decision. Gender affirmation surgery on intersex infants should be illegal.

When doctors and parents guess a kid's gender, they are often wrong. If they just waited a few years they would have a higher chance of being right. Everyone would be happier.

The case also forms part of the body of proof that trans people do in fact exist and are in fact valid.
