Elephants can be kept, but it requires a good amount of space and really good enclosure design involving people who have actually studied elephants.

Zoos fill a vital role in conservation and education, but we should definitely continue to improve them. I am old enough to have seen a lion in a bare cage behind bars and a bear in a pit... The last thirty years have seen so much improvement.

The key thing is not to rest on our laurels and say we're doing all we can.
