Even with today's technology, there is a point at which taking the train really does make more sense. America has crappy rail infrastructure, but in places where it doesn't...
For example, I live in DC, and I would NEVER fly to New York. If I get a ticket on the Acela, which isn't even true high speed, the cost was similar before the pandemic (caveat there), and by the time you added going through security, flying wasn't any faster.
What we need is to improve infrastructure and convince people that trains make sense.
Ugh on the hyperloop, though. I'd rather take a bit more time and be able to see the countryside, another major advantage of rail travel.
