Gender appears to have mattered a LOT to Nordic peoples, although Finland is an edge case. "Argr" (unmanly, with implications of liking it up the you know what) was a mortal insult. This more feels to me as if those who truly and innately went beyond gender roles were accepted and honored. But "wearing the clothes of the opposite gender" was grounds for divorce...
But you can have very strict gender roles AND still recognize trans/NB people as what they are.
