Hand Saga — Part 5 — Getting There

Figured everyone was owed an update.

So, here’s the current status of my poor hand and my suffering pinkie finger.

Status Report

I’m still wearing a removable orthotic splint part time. Which is very part time at this point.

I can type almost normally. Still not allowed to bear any weight on the hand, still not allowed to lift boxes or anything else heavy. My right hand is distinctly weaker.

I have much improved range of motion in my fingers, but I still do not have full use of my hand and won’t for a little while. My grip strength is still very weak. I can’t open child proof medicine bottles. I can open supplement bottles.

I can cut my food.

I’m doing occupational therapy twice a week, which has involved things ranging from hand massages to playing with lego. I feel twelve. (It was knock off lego. My twelve year old self would not have been impressed).

I have discovered that making my injured hand roll all the dice in a D&D session is surprisingly beneficial.

I will be evaluated on Wednesday and should be completely out of the splint at that point. I see my surgeon on February 16, at which point I should be medically cleared to do most things (including ride, although I’m…
