Harnessing phages might be at least part of the answer.

The only time in my life I have said that I wanted an antibiotic, I had a skin infection that was caused by a bite from a black fly. I KNEW it was an infection, my doctor agreed. She gave me the very mildest antibiotic she could, which cleared it right up.

But normally if a doctor says I need an antibiotic, I will indeed ask why. (In this case, the spreading infection was very visible).

One thing that needs to be addressed is overuse of precautionary antibiotics. Thankfully, fewer doctors are doing this. I didn't even get a course after my hand surgery because, apparently, infections after percutaneous pinning are extremely rare and typically very minor so they just tell you what the symptoms are and to call them if you see them.

We do need antibiotics, they're useful. But we need to stop handing them out like candy.
