Homo sapiens is an ecosystem engineer. So are beavers and elephants.
We have been ecosystem engineers since before we were Homo sapiens.
Right now, we're overdoing it and degrading ecosystems instead of managing them.
But attempts to save ecosystems can be bad too, such as afforestation...no, trees don't belong everywhere, people.
We've just gotten a bit too smart for our own good and we need to go back to managing ecosystems in ways that help us AND other species. Which isn't necessary going back to something in the past, it's looking at what promotes balance, biodiversity, and reasonable, sensible resource extraction.
Let's be more like beavers.
