And now for the rest. I realized I forgot to include graphic story in writing, so I’m putting it here too, although I consider it a writing/storytelling award.

Best Graphic Story or Comic

I’m always glad the Hugos have a comic award, even though there are the Eisners, because it reminds people that comics aren’t just for kids…and typically the comics nominated are not for kids.

  1. DIE, vol 4: Bleed. Kieron Gillen, art Stephanie Hans, letter Clayton Cowles. I love this series. It’s basically a really dark, adult, and actually good version of the old D&D cartoon. With many, many Easter eggs.
  2. Far Sector. Written by N.K. Jemisin, whose prose work I tend to bounce off of (Yes, I know she’s considered one of the best writers around, just call it evidence that not liking something doesn’t mean it’s bad). This is that rare bird, a mainstream superhero story that got nominated…it’s a murder mystery featuring an alien Green Lantern. Art by Jamal Campbell.
  3. Lore Olympus, vol 1. Rachel Smythe. Retelling of Persephone. Looks pretty.
  4. Monstress, vol 6. Marjorie Liu, art Sana Takeda. I’ve never cared for this series. I understand the appeal and the cats are cute, but the art style sets my teeth slightly on edge. Sorry, Takeda.
