Human reproduction is intense at all levels. Not only is pregnancy and childbirth more dangerous to us than most mammals (although it's dangerous to any mammal...ask somebody who breeds dogs, cats, or horses), but our young have an extended helpless period and an extended educational phase.

We put a LOT of resources into each offspring and the physical burden is disproportionately on the female.

Anyone willing to go through pregnancy and childbirth to add another human being to the world should be honored and respected. Maybe one day we'll develop artificial wombs, but the only reason people do it is because children are, yes, a treasure.

Many things could be done to make childbirth safer, but top of the list is to stop making women lie on their backs so doctors can see the baby easier. That small thing would make SO much difference.

Addressing the American shortage of midwives and doulas would help too.

And the so-called pro life movement is making it even more dangerous for both the pregnant person and the new baby. People who want kids are going to choose not to because if anything goes wrong, they can't get the care they need.

Also, we need universal healthcare so it doesn't cost $30,000 to give birth...if nothing goes wrong.
