I also think that there is also the fact that white people feel entitled to be mediocre.
I have dental issues that require a bit of extra care, including psychological care (yes, I am terrified).
The very best dental hygienist I have ever had in my life was (sadly, he disappeared from the practice during COVID, and I have no idea where he went, but I hope he's giving great service to others) an African man.
And I feel bad that I benefitted from the way he no doubt was forced to excel in order to come to the US to practice. None of the hygienists in that practice have ever been bad, but he stood head and shoulders over the others.
White people are entitled to be mediocre. Black people have to be excellent to get close to the same consideration.
And I know white people who would rather have a white hygienist that kept poking their gums than trust themselves to a Black man. Ya know?
