I am not a psychiatrist.
I am somebody with lasting (if mild) trauma from being abused by a coach...including being yelled at for falling. I lit. was triggered by Tutberidze's treatment of Valieva. And this is a coach who routinely burns athletes out.
The IOC needs to be given the right to sanction abusive coaches, especially when the athlete is a minor. They don't have a mechanism for what needs to happen: A lifetime ban on Tutberidze.
I will stick out my neck and say that Valieva wasn't "allowed" to skate. She was forced to skate by a coach enabled by her parents and by that appeals court (who bribed them?).
Tutberidze needs to never coach again, but there's nothing we in the west can do other than push for the IOC to have more teeth to act against blatant abuse by coaches.
Which happens at all levels, including non-competitive.
The girl who threw the tantrum was also one of her girls.
So was the winner, and while I'm not going to judge her for the emotional support plushie because man do I need one of those some times.
I'm going to judge Tutberidze for causing her to need one.
I suspect none of those girls will skate again, but that's fine because I'm sure she has a new batch coming up.
Valieva is 100% victim. I will stick out my neck again and say she probably didn't even know about the drugs. They were "vitamins."
