I can't have aspartame. Period. In any amount. It is safe for most people, but it has neurological impacts on a percentage of the population. Which I happen to fall into.
And one of the problems is that sugar taxes are causing manufacturers in some areas to put it in non-diet soda. For example, when I visit the U.K., if I want soda (I am not a habitual drinker), I am extremely limited in my choices. I can get Coke, Fentiman's (which is the best option, if expensive; it's a premium soda that is, in fact, made with considerably less sugar and honestly tastes better). I can't have lemon-lime soda, orange soda, Dr. Pepper, Irn Bru. Basically, it has to be U.S. made or premium. Because sugar tax in part, but it's always been a problem.
It took me a while to understand why my migraines went away when I emigrated to the U.S.!
Taking away the choice *not* to consume artificial sweeteners is honestly ableist, but...
