I do know women who have changed their name because they:
1. Hated their birth name.
2. Were abused by their father.
I once got called "morally bankrupt" by a so-called feminist for not changing mine. I didn't change it because I'm the last with the name and I and my husband decided not to have children, but we also decided that if we had a birth control failure and ended up with kids they would have MY last name for that reason.
But some women want to get away from their birth name and if you do it when you get married, you don't have to pay for it in many states. And I get that.
I don't get changing it because it's tradition, though. Traditions can be changed.
