I grew up lower middle class in a working class area, went to private school on assisted placement (a partial merit scholarship), went to a second tier university...

...and still talk like I was dragged up in the gutter any time I can get away with it. I was told so many times I needed to pick up my aitches and talk proper that I refused to do so until I got to the U.S. and had to code switch so people would understand me at all. My husband jokes that the second the wheels touch down at Heathrow...

My father was a factory worker and then a landscape gardener. His father built organs. My mother's father was a factory worker, a true union man (an actual card carrying Marxist). Somehow he married an amazingly talented cabaret singer from London...I have no idea to this day how they met ;).

My mother made it to college and made sure I made it to college.

So, maybe I'm working class after all. And you know what? I'd rather speak like I was dragged up in the gutter than struggle through RP!
