I said that all mammalian pregnancies carry the risk of death.
I did not say that most pregnancies end with the death of the mother.
I said that there is a risk of death. Which happens to be three times higher in the U.S. than in Canada and significantly higher if you're Black, low income, or live a long way from a hospital.
Pregnancy carries risk. That is all I said.
Additionally, 50 to 60,000 people each and every year experience "severe maternal morbidity," which means complications that result in significant short- or long-term consequences. And this only counts morbidity directly related to childbirth. It does not include, for example, complications of ectopic pregnancy. It doesn't include gestational diabetes, which can result in major health issues years later in the form of post-gestational type II diabetes.
What it does include is a variety of conditions affecting every single part of the body, including sepsis, renal failure, heart attacks, blood loss, etc. Many do not fully recover.
Yes, most pregnancies are safe, but we are still asking people to take a risk...and in this country that risk is exacerbated by our consistent refusal to actually give them any help.
