I sometimes (not in a while but mostly for lack of opportunity) wear a "corset" (actually a bodice) that is modern and spring steel boned.

It is more comfortable than a bra. It's an under bust style which is designed to accentuate, yup, you got it. With the proper under shirt it gives as much support as a bra.

I have danced for multiple hours in this thing. I have fenced in it. I have run in it. I have ushered an event, on my feet for four or five hours in it.

It does bring my waist in slightly by holding in the flab a 49 year old perimenopausal woman inevitably carries, but it doesn't create a wasp waist look.

And again, I can run, dance, and fight in it. I could probably ride a horse in it, but I haven't actually tried.

The only thing I can't do is bend over to pick something up. Women who wore stays and bodices probably had healthier backs because you literally can't lift a heavy object incorrectly while wearing one.

I think I may change my plans and wear it in a couple of weeks because this is reminding me of how much fun it is. I'd love to buy a couple more, but they're expensive.

Tips for those who want to try it (and note, men's bodices are available too...they're designed to accentuate your shoulders and make you look masculine):

1. Go to an event and get fitted. Don't order these things unless you're ordering them from somebody you know. The sizing can be different from corsetiere to corsetiere and if you don't know how they're supposed to fit you can either go too loose and get no benefit or too tight and end up in significant discomfort.

2. If you have smaller breasts, go for under bust, which makes your breasts look bigger. If you have very large breasts, you want one that also covers the breasts for the extra support. Same if you want your breasts to look a bit smaller.

3. Corsets are worn under your other clothes. Bodices/stays are worn over your other clothes. The proper shirt is important.

4. Don't buy plastic stays. They are a lot cheaper. They also don't last as long and there is a significant risk of the stay breaking, piercing the upholstery, and cutting you. Whalebone is not really available any more. Modern stays are steel.
