I suspect that women who were good at hunting hunted, hunted after they had children, etc. The one time they might have taken a break would be when pregnant, because of the risk to the unborn. At that point their mate would, indeed, have provided for them, in much the way a male falcon brings food for his mate during the exclusive female brooding period.

This probably involved a period of consortship as we observe in chimpanzees, which eventually, over time, evolved into marriage...but long term formal marriage only happens when significant property is involved. Just watch what's happening now. Less inherited property = fewer people bothering to get married. Most hunter-gatherers appear to have been serial monogamists not pair bonders.
