I suspect this is going to end with the vast majority of us rolling up our sleeves for a couple of doses of Jynneos. Unfortunately, I don't know that we're going to be able to avoid it getting into a rodent reservoir in the U.S., and then we're stuck with it.
We need to both ramp up production of Jynneos and develop a safe alternative (the older smallpox vaccine is not exactly safe) to it because Jynneos has the same problem mainstream flu vaccines do...it's created in chicken embryos and thus can't be taken by anyone who has a serious allergy to eggs. So, we're going to need at least one more vaccine. mRNA is not good for this because we need one that is shelf stable and easy to transport and cheap so it's usable in areas with poor infrastructure.
We also need financial structures in place. NOBODY in the U.S. can afford to isolate for a month except the ultra-rich. We need a compensation fund that is designed to protect the income and jobs of anyone who is recommended to isolate by a medical professional. They have to be paid, the employer is reimbursed, and they can't be fired.
