I think cats get a tiny bit confused by human facial expressions in general.

They actually did a study not that long ago that proves that horses, however, are perfectly capable of recognizing a human smile, understanding what it means, and responding with their own equivalent.

I suspect it has to do with cats having a very holistic idea of facial expressions and body language? They definitely show something like love. Or at least shameless begging for scritches.
