I think it's a check your privilege thing.

Being a native English speaker is a privilege. People often aren't aware of their privileges until they are made aware of them. Then they become defensive.

I KNOW being a native English speaker is a privilege. English is a trade tongue in much of the world and not having to learn it has freed up my time for other things. Massive privilege right there.

It's time for Anglophones to acknowledge that.
