I think we have a tendency to assume that people in the past were automatically less "enlightened" about these things.

And it comes from both the people who want to oppress same sex relationships...and the LGBT community. I think a lot of us fear that if we acknowledge the past wasn't so bad then we may have to fear things getting worse again...
