I was an involuntary only child too. My mother was medically unable to carry a second child due to complications that were at least part the result of what I now suspect was undiagnosed gestational diabetes (if you're pregnant, get your blood sugar checked. Please). My parents also considered adoption, but ultimately decided against it.

I also asked why I didn't have any siblings. My mother being the woman she was, she told me the truth, that it wasn't safe for her to have another baby.

She later, when I was older, told me about the sibling she miscarried.

I was your daughter.

She will be just fine.
