I will note that there is a loud minority of vegans who provoke this kind of thing, unfortunately.

I have run into people who will walk up to somebody eating meat and start graphically describing slaughter houses, compare eating meat to the Holocaust (from a Jew, stop), etc.

And some people will encounter one of those people, extend it to all vegetarians and vegans and then start fights with the decent ones.

(I'm not saying it can ALL be blamed on what I call veganists, but omg, some of those people need to just stop).
