It's a challenge for sure.
The most important thing is to use inclusive language when directing things at groups. I still occasionally have a client demand I use he/she instead of they and it makes my hackles go up.
It's definitely misgendering. I've also asked somebody for their pronouns and have my head bitten off for it when the person concerned was wearing a dress, a blonde wig in pigtails, and a full beard. He was mad I didn't assume he. I wasn't assuming anything when somebody was presenting as a mix of genders. Which I share to let you know you actually can't win and anything you do is going to upset somebody, so the best goal is to upset as few people as possible.
However, I do draw a line between accidental misgendering and being aggressive/obnoxious about it.
