It's cultural. I've personally worked a job where calling in sick was not allowed. No excused absences for any reason. I had to work while pretty dang sick because it was that or get literally evicted.

We've socialized people such that working while sick is normal, expected, and not doing so makes you weak, lazy, a bad employee, etc.

THAT is what we need to change.
