Looking at things from the outside as a non-Christian, I once told one of those hellfire preacher types (who was pissing me off) that i really wished churches would recruit by saying how amazing they are not by making people afraid (this guy did an altar call at a funeral, which I consider to be HUGELY disrespectful, not to mention manipulative). I mean, how about "We have a good preacher." "We have a good choir." "Our Bible study groups have some really interesting discussions."

When a church tries to recruit me by telling me if I don't immediately turn to their brand of Christianity I will never see my deceased relative again, that is...well...how can they even imagine that world work? In fact, it's so manipulative I would immediately assume the person saying it to be an actual abuser.

But if somebody is looking for a community, how about telling them why they should choose yours?
