Religion itself is not the problem. When religion becomes politicized, problem. When forcing your religion on others...

Christianity has been a problem since Constantine merged it with the cult of Mithras and politicized it to try and save a faily empire. But there are Christian sects that understand that and have tried to move away from it.

I am a religious person in my own way, and I do not want my beliefs enshrined into law (although I would appreciate not having them rendered illegal) nor do I want to push them on anyone else.

This is exactly what the Founding Fathers sought to prevent. They saw what happens when religion and government are combined.

Unfortunately they weren't able to prevent it forever. Now we're going to have to take steps to fix things again.
