Part of the issue is some of these words have multiple meanings. I mean, "idiot" is absolutely an ableist word...but has it drifted enough in common usage to mean "Somebody who does something foolish" rather than "Somebody of low intelligence" that... As in, I don't think a lot of people even know that it used to be a derogatory term for a person with a low IQ...
