People are hating on Musk because he broke a promise to those employees that they would get to work from home forever.
Twitter is headquartered in the Bay Area, possibly the highest cost of living in the country. I doubt many of Twitter's remote workers stayed there, not when they could work from somewhere cheaper. Many will have moved to be closer to family, too.
And you do realize that Twitter's 2FA broke for hours last night? The other day, only some people could send/receive DMs. That's because he fired everyone competent and took a major perk away from the rest.
He's destroying Twitter and this is a huge part of why. It's the 21st century. Younger employees in particular expect to be able to work from home at least part of the time.
And some of the people he told to come back to the office undoubtedly, to keep their jobs, would have had to sell nice houses and move into tiny condos, where the kids have to share a bedroom. If you're at all competent, at that point, you get another job.
Companies need people to survive. You have to do at least some things that work for people. "40 hours in the office minimum and I'd like to see 80" works for very few people. "Doesn't work for people who want to hustle." Hustle is code for "Get up, work, eat lunch at desk, work, take a break for dinner, work, sleep, repeat." The cat's in the cradle with a silver spoon.
No, nothing can replace a real conversation with someone you care about. But that someone shouldn't be your coworkers.
Elon Musk is destroying Twitter and ending work from home is a big part of why we won't have it much longer.
A company can't make money without people.
