Sales tax is regressive. It causes poor people to pay a higher percentage of their income than rich people. 50% tax on food? You realize many, even most urban poor can't grow their own food (and heck, a lot of urban middle class) because they don't have yards? Some people in my neighborhood don't even have balconies, and this is an affluent neighborhood.

50% sales tax on clothes? I have friends choosing between food and bills and buying clothes at Wal-Mart that fall apart within five weeks.

The basic economics of this would be "Rich people, fine, poor people get to make the sacrifice of going hungry"

You realize people in rural areas don't have the choice to "park the car and use the pickup for a planter" and never will...some people have to drive an hour into town to get necessities. That's where we need electric vehicle infrastructure. (Note, I do not own a car, but I live in one of a VERY few places in the U.S. where that is remotely feasible).

I get where you are coming from, but the idea that we can all walk everywhere and grow our own food is incredibly privileged.
