Some disabled people need plastic straws. A woman DIED because she was substituting a metal straw (which are fall hazards).
To many people "Give up your plastic straw" means "Give up drinking in public" or "Carry a bag full of straws everywhere." It makes them feel as if they are being told the environment is more important than their existence.
For me, no, switching is fine, as long as nobody gives me a paper straw with alcohol (don't do that, it affects the taste...use bamboo if you're avoiding plastic). But the entire campaign smacks of ableism.
If you want to go after a low hanging plastic fruit, stop buying beer and soda that is held together by plastic rings. There are easy alternatives, it encourages brewers to switch, and nobody is told that their life damages the environment. And they are FAR more dangerous to wildlife, esp. when drunk people drop them on the beach.
