So, somebody commented on another blog post that there aren’t enough PoC writing horror.

I’m inclined to agree, but there are some, so I thought I would shed a spotlight on some PoC who are writing horror (or at least things which float towards the boundary between that and dark fantasy).

I’m hoping my readers can find more! (Note, these are in no specific order)

Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The author of Mexican Gothic writes a kind of creepy horror/thriller blend. I’ve only read Mexican Gothic of her work, and while it was not my kind of book, it was very well written.

If you like crime-based horror with speculative elements or if you like classic Gothic stories, down to the evil house, pick up Mexican Gothic. You won’t regret it.

P. Djeli Clark

I’m not quite sure whether I would call Ring Shout horror or dark fantasy. With Lovecraftian elements and a take on whiteness as monstrosity, it’s a quite excellent novella. Oh, and a sword-swinging heroine. Don’t forget the sword-swinging heroine.

Much of Clark’s other work falls into the dark fantasy realm. I’m particularly fond of The Haunting of Tram Car 015, which is a supernatural mystery of sorts.
