Sometimes We All Have To Check Our Privilege

So, who knows what a 2-Ex kid is? A 2-Ex kid is one who is both academically gifted and learning disabled. Most of the time this involves autism or ADHD.

I’m bringing this up because you can be privileged and oppressed at the same time. There are different axes of privilege.

I have white privilege (at least as long as I’m not “made” as Jewish). I don’t have male privilege.

A Black man has male privilege, but not white privilege.

And then there are other forms of privilege.

A Few Forms of Privilege

Here are some ways in which you might be privileged that you might not be thinking about:

  1. Geography. Which is also hugely relative. Our “stork drop” affects a lot of things. For example, I was born in the British Midlands and raised in a faded mill town. My beloved husband was born in a nice suburb of Minneapolis. He has a certain degree of geography privilege. I won’t say where I grew up was bad, in fact I love it. But I also grew up in a town where the cops couldn’t catch a cold (and often didn’t care to try), where street violence at night was fairly common, and where many of my neighbors lived in two up two downs.
