Sounds about right. Fortunately, some hospital systems are trying to do better.

ERs need to know both your gender and what parts you have so they can look for the right things (I'm remembering the case of the trans man who had a preventable miscarriage because ER doctors saw a man and didn't realize there was a uterus in there).

But the question needs to be asked respectfully.
