The other side effect of begging friends and family to buy the book is that even IF the algorithms don't spot it, you don't want people buying your book who don't normally read your genre. Not in large quantities.

This messes up the other part of the algorithm, the one which decides who your book should be recommended to, which also has a negative impact on sales by showing your book to people who have no interest in it.

So, yeah, don't do that.

You also don't want your friends or your mom writing reviews because they WILL look fake to the algorithm and also push your book out of visibility.
