The problem is:

1. A penurious basic income still gives employers a bit too much power. True, they can't KILL you by firing you, assuming we also have universal healthcare. But they can absolutely force you into an untenable housing downgrade.

2. As West Wind pointed out: You can't look for a job without the internet.

Nope, not even fast food.

Basic income needs to cover:

1. Decent housing. Not a rat-infested cellar, but at a minimum an apartment with a kitchen.

2. Basic clothing. Not necessarily designer stuff.

3. Internet access and cell phone access.

4. Local transportation.

5. Groceries, including healthy food.

It needs to be determined locally based off of actual costs of living and readjusted as those change.

Otherwise it's not basic income, its a citizens dividend.
