...created a way for ordinary people to be "monks." The Third Order Secular is unique in modern Christianity, and was even retained by some Protestants (specifically the Anglican church and the Lutheran church).

Members live in the world, but gather together at intervals and try to emulate Francis. They write their own vows in which they decide how to interpret Poverty and Chastity.

I was literally raised in the Anglican Third Order and it was expected that I would profess in due course, but I fell out with the church pretty permanently while in college and no longer consider myself Christian.

But I still have a peculiar respect for Francis, and this article supports it.
