Using the pronouns somebody asks you to use and making an honest effort (all the vast majority of people want) to remember them is common courtesy.

Think of it like respecting somebody with a PhD's desire to be called "Doctor."

0.6 percent of the adult population of the United States *admits* to being transgender. That's about 1.4 million people. It's double the findings from a decade ago, not because there are more trans people but because things have improved and more people admit to it.

This is an estimate which relies on self identification and doesn't allow for the fact that more youth are able to express their gender identity. Many trans people still hide who they really are because of, ya know?
