We already are. People have prosthetics that respond to their thoughts. And while right now it's external, we are all keeping a machine in our pockets that I have more than once called my "External memory."

I don't believe that we will lose our soul if we become more bound to these machines, but that we will become more knowledgable. Sadly, not wiser. We still have to work on THAT.
