We already had this battle once with beach volleyball...which included competitors worried the bikinis would be banned. BV now allows several variant uniforms (although sadly I think you still need a dispensation to wear hijab), most of the women still wear the bikinis but now they're doing it by choice.

The same rules would be perfectly reasonable here. BV players are allowed to wear bikinis, shorts and tank tops, or longer leggings and tops with sleeves. Whatever they are most comfortable with. Forcing woman athletes to wear something specific DOES impact their performance; it favors those comfortable with what the rules allow.

As a side note, the German women's gymnastic team chose to compete in full length unitards this year because they felt sexualized by the traditional leotard. The rules have apparently allowed for this for years. I also saw more of the men wearing shorts. The German team's action highlights that women don't have to bare their legs and I'd love to see the U.S. team allow women the choice of leotard or unitard (the extra cost would be more than recouped by the money they get from selling replicas). Sadly, they didn't qualify for the finals, but they looked good!
