When you're working a shift that's shorter than that, expected to be physically working the entire time, don't have enough hours to pay for food AND clothing AND shelter, and are being abused...yeah, I've been there.

And yes, I made mistakes. Of course I made mistakes. I once signed the customer's credit card receipt and had to cancel it and ring it back up. Thankfully, they thought it was hilarious and didn't report me.

And yeah, I worked with the flu too. Now I work for myself so I still don't get paid sick time, but I also ain't gonna give anyone anything I have and if I can't work I usually have enough of a cushion to deal with it. Instead of it being "Come in or lose your home."

We really do expect the most of those at the "bottom."
